Repco Heritage

The early 1920s marked a transformative period for transport in Australia, particularly with the rise of motor vehicles following the widespread introduction of the Model T Ford in 1908. By the early 1920s, there were almost 100,000 cars on the roads in Australia, equating to nearly one car for every 55 people. This surge in car ownership created a growing demand for automotive parts and services.

In Melbourne, Geoffrey Russell, a young and enterprising man, saw this need and took action. He opened a small factory in a tin shed in Collingwood, Victoria, under the name Automotive Grinding Company. His goal was to manufacture replacement parts for the increasing number of vehicles on the road. Meanwhile, in Queensland, three men had a different vision—establishing a national airline, which would become the iconic Qantas. Little did Russell know that in his small factory, he was laying the foundations for what would become another iconic Australian brand: Repco (Replacement Parts COmpany).

Repco quickly expanded its reach, becoming a well-known name not only in Australia but internationally. During World War II, much of Repco’s manufacturing capacity was directed towards supporting the war effort. Post-war, the company gained further recognition with its involvement in the development and manufacture of key components for Australia’s first Holden model, the 48-215, which was released in 1948.

Repco’s reputation soared even higher in the 1960s, particularly with its involvement in Formula One racing. In 1966, Repco Brabhams played a pivotal role in Sir Jack Brabham’s victory in Formula One. Brabham’s achievement of winning both the World Constructor and Driver Titles remains an unparalleled feat in motorsport history.

The company’s growth continued throughout the 20th century, expanding into New Zealand and diversifying its offerings. In the 1980s, Repco pioneered a dual retail/trade store format, becoming a household name in both the automotive retail and trade sectors. This evolution reflects Repco’s enduring legacy as a key player in the automotive parts industry.
